12-day scuba safari
(March - November)

Vilanculos is a 2-hour flight from Johannesburg International airport. Upon arrival, you are given the opportunity to settle in before the orientation dinner. This is when you will be introduced to your local surroundings and briefed on the dive schedule for the following 2 days.

Vilanculos is a fishing village known as the gateway to Bazaruto Archipelago - a marine national park since 1971 that has ensured the protection of their unique ecosystem and sheltered the best viable breeding populations of the dugong. Vilanculos is becoming a small metropolis with the opening of lodges, camp sites, restaurants and dhow (small motor ferry's made by local carpenters using knowledge, tools and techniques handed down from generation to generation) taxi operators.

The most popular dive spot here is 2-mile reef which is 2 miles long!. Two-mile reef lies between Bazaruto island and Benguerra island - these islands form part of the Bazaruto Archipelago marine national park. Two-mile reef has a maximum of 20 metres and is pleasant for all levels of divers. The boat ride of 30 minutes to the site is often interrupted by sightings of dolphin pods. Swim throughs, coral outcrops, caves and gullies characterize this barrier reef. Inhabited by subtropical fish such as Parrot, Angel and Butterfly fish; this is a feast for your eyes as you can have close encounters with turtles and manta rays. Dugongs are elusive and rare, most likely to be seen along two-mile reef.

The drive to Tofu is four hours long but too short to take in the beautiful surrounds of Mozambique countryside. Explore the markets of Maxixe where locals gather to sell their produce and keep your camera ready for the scenic stops along the route. Once in Tofu, settle in before the orientation dinner where you will be briefed on the schedule for the next four days and introduced to the beauty of Tofu.

Tofu has long white beaches with soft sand that seeps through your toes. This small village lies just outside the village of Inhambane, which is growing in popularity as a dive destination.

Diving at Tofu includes the magnificent Oasis (also known as the Office). This reef consists of a ledge covered in corals and colourful sponges. Manta reef is known for its prolific fish life and the cleaning stations where successions of giant manta rays come to be cleaned, lining up like aeroplanes coming in to land. These dive sites are recommended for advanced divers as the diving ranges from 18 metres to 35 metres on the outer edge. Whale sharks are best sighted from late October to early December and late February to early April during their migrations.

Scuba is followed by safari, so on an early crisp morning you are transferred across the South African border to the Kruger National Park. On this day we say goodbye to the beauty of the ocean and say hello to the wild of the land. On arrival in Komatiepoort (small town outside the Kruger National Park), a brief orientation dinner is held to brief you on the schedule for the next two days.

The Kruger National Park is one of the oldest and best known Game Parks in the world and has become a landmark for South Africa. The Kruger National Park occupies a 19,455 sq km corner in the North-East of South Africa with borders shared with Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
The Kruger National Park has long been one of the premier game parks in Africa is abundant in wildlife with 147 mammals, 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 336 trees of Africa. Games drives in open safari vehicles in search of Africa's Big Five; Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino and Buffalo is a truly surreal experience.

Game drives are done early in the morning when the animals are most active and at sunset when nocturnal animals begin to appear. You can also go on game walks with a game ranger who will show you the art of tracking and explain how the delicate ecosystem works as well as the challenges facing conservationists today.

The tranquil bush hides the wildlife as predator seek prey and you may witness the wonder of elephants; travelling in herds ranging in sizes from 2-24 with the largest female- the matriarch- determining all movement. The Kruger National Park has contributed the most to the population growth of this impressive beast. The king of the beasts is Africa's largest carnivore -lions command respect and instil fear in man and animals both. Witness the sunrise with promises of a new day and set to give the bright stars the stage on the sky. Campfires are gatherings for tales to be told; crackling wood your background music as your adventure comes to an end.

On your last day you have the chance to reminisce over your scuba safari - the trip memories are made of- as your guide transfers you to Johannesburg. Back to civilisation but the wild or your scuba safari is only a memory away.
